Vickie Ferguson Memorial Scholarship

About the Vickie Ferguson Scholarship

The Vickie Ferguson Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Vickie Ferguson–long-time member of RMC-SCBWI and The Wild Writers critique group–who passed away in May 2005. Vickie was dedicated to her writing and generous with her support, love, and friendship. This scholarship seeks to support writers who are committed to their craft and are currently actively engaged in writing. The Fund will offer a scholarship for one local area author to attend the RMC-SCBWI Fall Conference (both days), plus the cost of a manuscript critique. The 2014 Fall Conference is September 20-21 in Lakewood, CO.

NOTE: Because the Illustrator Calendar Contest offers a scholarship for artists, we have discontinued an illustrator scholarship as part of the Vickie Ferguson Scholarship.

To apply, please see Instructions and Information below.

2014 Winner and Runner-Up

Ida Olson, last year’s runner-up(!) will be receiving the scholarship this year. Ida will receive full conference tuition and a manuscript critique.

The opening to her novel, VIRAGO:

The brutal southern sun flashed off the azure water of the Mare Nostrum as I crossed the limestone clearing to meet my opponent’s sword. Sweat trickled between my bound breasts when I leaned forward, balancing my weight on the balls of my feet. I studied the fleshy, pale skin of a councilor’s son, my focus absolute.

Will Limon is the runner-up and can choose to sit by the faculty member of his choice if he attends the conference.

The opening of his novel,, TALISMAN OF FIRE

Aran slipped the sling from his belt and fit a stone into its leather pouch. He peered through the morning mist that curled about the trees like the cloaks of fleeing spirits. There. Forty paces away. A dusty rabbit rummaged in the needles beneath an old pine. Such an offering on this day of ceremony would surely please his father.

Both Ida and Will provided well-thought out reasons for how the conference could further their goals and careers and we’re excited to support them!

2013 Winners

For the 2013 Fall Conference, over fifty authors and illustrators sent in their entries for the Vickie Ferguson Scholarship. Christine Macdonald was awarded the writing scholarship and Tiemdow (Dow) Phumiruk the illustration scholarship.

Ida Olson was the runner-up for writing and Tabitha Aaron the runner-up for illustration. Runners-up sat next to the speaker of their choice at lunch on Saturday. We also awarded Honorable Mention in both categories in 2013: Julie Rowan-Zoch for writing and Tia Christine for illustrating.
