What is a Tween book? Sometimes referred to as “upper middle grade” or “lower young adult,” these books are a lot like their readers: in between. Typically, characters are becoming more aware of the world around them, how they fit into it, and how they can impact this world. Tween books are aimed at middle school students rather than upper elementary students. Using the movie rating analogy, think of middle grade books as “G,” young adult books as “PG13” or “R” and tween books as “PG.”
The “tween” category is a relatively new one, and there is some debate about how or even whether to use the term. Our website lists both middle-grade and tween categories, but some books are listed under both.
